Course overview

Build understanding through guided instruction and serious practice.

Targeted at finance professionals, implementation consultants, and system analysts, the course equips learners to design, configure, and optimize real-time financial reporting and business operations.

Who this is for

Practical capability for the work ahead.

A five-week, practice-led foundation in SAP S/4HANA Financial Accounting for beginners who need to perform, explain, validate, and troubleshoot core finance transactions. The standard course emphasizes the integrated FI operating model—organizational structure, General Ledger, Universal Journal, AP, AR, Asset Accounting, and introductory CO—rather than attempting full implementation-specialist, migration, treasury, advanced closing, or product-costing coverage.

SAP modules

Subject areas covered in this course.

Delivery expectations

Format & Access: 100% online, self-paced learning combined with live instructor-led virtual sessions, case-study walkthroughs, and hands-on system access in a live SAP S/4HANA sandbox environment.

How learning works

A weekly cycle built around application.

Live instruction introduces and connects the material. Independent practice turns that material into usable capability.

Live instruction

Instructor-led sessions explain the process, demonstrate the work, and connect individual topics to the larger operating model.

Independent practice

Expect approximately three to four hours of structured practice for every hour of live instruction.

Trouble-ticket support

Show-stopping practice issues can be documented for instructor review, normally with a response within one to two business days.

1 Company Structure and S/4HANA Finance Foundations5 live hours · 16 practice hours

Establish a working mental model of the S/4HANA Finance environment, navigate finance applications, and explain how enterprise structure and foundational settings govern every later posting.

Included topics

  • SAP S/4HANA Finance operating model, deployment context, and Fiori navigation
  • Chart of accounts, fiscal year variant, posting periods, currencies, and the variant principle
  • Finance process map: record-to-report, procure-to-pay, and lead-to-cash integration
  • Configuration awareness versus end-user processing: display, validate, test, and document changes safely
  • ECC/classic FI and 'Simple Finance' terminology encountered in legacy project conversations

Independent practice

Build navigation confidence and make learners able to trace how company-code, chart-of-accounts, fiscal-year, and business-partner decisions affect finance work before they begin G/L and subledger postings.

  • Navigate the SAP Fiori launchpad and locate the applications or transaction equivalents used for company-code, G/L, business-partner, and document display work.
  • Map a supplied enterprise scenario to company, company code, chart of accounts, fiscal year variant, posting periods, and controlling area; identify which assignments are required for posting.
  • Inspect configuration and master-data display records in the training client; document the purpose of each setting without attempting unrestricted productive customizing.
  • Create or maintain sample business partners in customer and supplier roles where authorization permits, then identify the company-code accounting data required for AP and AR.
  • Create a structured trouble ticket for one deliberately introduced access, master-data, or posting-period blocker, including steps, document/master-data identifiers, screenshot evidence, expected result, and actual error.

Ready for the next session when: Learners can navigate to core finance objects, distinguish organizational units from master data, explain the purpose of the company code and chart of accounts, and identify the information needed to investigate a basic posting failure.

2 General Ledger Accounting and the Universal Journal5 live hours · 18 practice hours

Perform and validate foundational G/L postings, understand their document flow into the Universal Journal, and resolve common posting and clearing issues.

Included topics

  • Universal Journal (ACDOCA): single journal-entry foundation for FI and CO reporting
  • Ledgers, chart of accounts, fiscal year, currency, and core G/L design relationships
  • G/L account master data and account controls, including open-item management
  • Accounting documents: header and line items, document types, field status, posting periods, reversals, and validation awareness
  • Manual journal postings, recurring-entry orientation, open-item management, and manual clearing
  • Document splitting, tax-code, and cross-company-code posting awareness
  • G/L line-item display, basic reporting, and drilldown from report to source document

Independent practice

Give learners enough repetitions to post, reverse, display, reconcile, and clear realistic G/L items, while connecting operational screens to the journal-entry view and reporting attributes.

  • Create or inspect G/L master records and classify them as balance-sheet or profit-and-loss accounts; identify open-item-management and relevant control implications.
  • Post balanced journal entries for expense, accrual, correction, and transfer scenarios; use appropriate document dates, posting dates, document types, tax-code examples, and account assignments supplied by the lab.
  • Display accounting documents and Universal Journal line items; explain the relationship among company code, ledger, G/L account, profit center/segment where available, cost center, and document line items.
  • Execute manual clearing for open items, reverse an incorrect document, and verify the document chain and resulting balances.
  • Use a standard G/L or line-item report to reconcile a supplied scenario, then document the cause and corrective action for an intentionally failed or unbalanced posting.

Ready for the next session when: Learners can independently make and validate basic G/L postings, identify the resulting journal-entry data, clear open items, and explain why a document did or did not post.

3 Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Subledgers5 live hours · 16 practice hours

Execute the essential AP and AR lifecycle, manage open items through payment or receipt, and explain the integration of subledgers with G/L and upstream purchasing/sales processes.

Included topics

  • Business Partner customer and supplier roles, reconciliation accounts, and core AP/AR company-code data
  • Accounts Payable lifecycle: supplier invoice, credit memo, open items, payment, and clearing
  • Accounts Receivable lifecycle: customer invoice, credit memo, incoming payment, and clearing
  • Payment terms, cash discounts, payment differences, and open-item analysis
  • Automatic Payment Program and dunning: business purpose, setup dependencies, proposal/test processing, and result review
  • AP integration with procurement and AR integration with sales: FI document outcomes
  • Financial Accounting organizational structure: company, company code, business area/segment orientation, and assignments

Independent practice

Learners repeatedly complete invoice-to-payment and invoice-to-receipt cycles, inspect reconciliation-account effects, and practice resolving realistic open-item and master-data issues.

  • Create, display, and amend training business partners in supplier and customer roles; identify reconciliation account, payment terms, payment method, dunning-related, and company-code fields.
  • Post supplier invoices, credit memos, and outgoing-payment scenarios; display supplier open items and verify the G/L reconciliation effect.
  • Post customer invoices, credit memos, incoming payments, and residual/payment-difference examples; clear customer open items and verify the reconciliation effect.
  • Run or simulate the key stages of automatic payment processing and dunning in the training environment; distinguish a proposal/test result from a production decision.
  • Trace one procure-to-pay and one lead-to-cash integration example into FI; prepare a support-ready issue record for a payment, clearing, or master-data exception.

Ready for the next session when: Learners can process and verify standard customer and supplier transactions, explain open-item status and reconciliation accounts, and distinguish standard processing from configuration or upstream integration issues.

4 Asset Accounting (FI-AA) Essentials5 live hours · 15 practice hours

Complete and validate a basic fixed-asset lifecycle, understand its integration with G/L and CO, and recognize when a specialist Asset Accounting process or configuration topic is required.

Included topics

  • Asset Accounting process model and integration with General Ledger and Controlling
  • Chart of depreciation, depreciation areas, asset classes, account determination, and depreciation-key orientation
  • Asset master data and inherited depreciation defaults
  • Asset transactions: acquisition, transfer orientation, retirement, and resulting documents
  • Depreciation test run, posting run, error-log analysis, and period-end checks
  • Asset Explorer/basic asset reporting and reconciliation to G/L
  • Business Partner as the current S/4HANA master-data entry point for customer and supplier roles
  • Reverse Transaction — In the business world we often post a transaction in the wrong account.

Independent practice

Develop credible experience with the lifecycle learners will encounter in finance operations: asset master data, acquisition, depreciation, retirement, document review, and basic reporting.

  • Inspect the relationship among chart of depreciation, depreciation areas, asset classes, account determination, and the asset master; identify inherited/defaulted values.
  • Create an asset master in a supplied asset class and validate useful life, depreciation key, cost-center assignment where applicable, and required master-data fields.
  • Post an external acquisition and an integrated acquisition example where available; display the asset value, resulting FI document, and associated journal entries.
  • Perform a depreciation test run and analyze the log; identify a deliberately introduced error such as a missing account assignment, blocked cost center, or closed posting period.
  • Post or simulate an asset retirement, review Asset Explorer or equivalent reporting, and reconcile the asset activity to the related G/L postings.

Ready for the next session when: Learners can explain and execute a basic asset lifecycle, verify its FI consequences, and recognize that parallel valuation, migration, and sophisticated valuation requirements require specialist design.

5 Controlling Foundations, Integrated Reporting, and Finance Capstone5 live hours · 15 practice hours

Connect FI postings to introductory CO objects and cost accounts, then consolidate the entire course through a realistic end-to-end finance scenario, reconciliation, and troubleshooting exercise.

Included topics

  • Controlling organizational basics: controlling area, cost centers, internal orders, and account-assignment objects
  • Cost accounts in S/4HANA: primary and secondary cost G/L account types and required CO assignments
  • Cost-center and internal-order postings, monitoring, and basic reporting
  • FI/CO integration through the Universal Journal, including asset depreciation and operational cost postings
  • Fiori-enabled finance reporting, document drilldown, reconciliation, and basic period-end worklist orientation
  • End-to-end finance capstone: post, clear, trace, reconcile, correct, and communicate a support issue
  • Follow-on boundary: allocations, activity pricing, product costing, Margin Analysis/profitability analysis, advanced closing, Treasury, Group Reporting, Central Finance, and migration

Independent practice

Turn component knowledge into a coherent finance workflow: learners post, trace, correct, explain, report on, and document an integrated business scenario independently.

  • Create or inspect a controlling area, cost center, internal order, and cost-account assignment in the supplied training scenario; identify their relationship to the company code and chart of accounts.
  • Post primary-cost/revenue examples with cost-center or internal-order assignment and trace the resulting data to the Universal Journal.
  • Explain, using a controlled demonstration or report, the role of secondary-cost G/L accounts in internal allocations; do not configure allocation cycles from scratch.
  • Complete a capstone scenario spanning G/L journal entry, supplier invoice/payment, customer invoice/receipt, asset acquisition/depreciation, and a cost assignment; reconcile the resulting documents and balances.
  • Produce a concise project-style evidence pack: process steps, screenshots/document numbers, a reconciliation result, one corrected error, and one structured trouble ticket with root-cause hypothesis and escalation boundary.

Ready for the next session when: Graduates are ready for guided project-support, finance super-user, or junior analyst practice in core FI processes and have a clear follow-on roadmap for advanced FI configuration, closing, Asset Accounting, or Controlling specialization.
